We leave for home today. I wish we could have stayed until Sunday, but real life calls. The voting for the Grand Jury Prize will be held this Saturday! Keep your fingers crossed!!
The Surrogate is a smashing success!! Two standing ovations at it’s premiere Monday which is unheard of at this festival. Later that day it was purchased by Fox Search Light Films, so it’s guaranteed world wide distribution. Everyone we meet who saw it thinks it deserves an Academy Award Nomination as well as Best Actor- John Hawkes and Best Actress- Helen Hunt. I’m hoping William H. Macy is also including in the nomination category for Best Supporting Actor.
We hear that it’s very likely it will be released this Autum!!! When you see it you will understand why I’m so excited and proud.
When I saw viewed it for the first time Monday, I cried and laughed with many in the audience including men. When I asked what made me cry more than most, it was because of the memories it evoked of my time with Mark, knowing how he would have enjoyed seeing it, and because it’s the first time Surrogate Partners have been portrayed as the truly caring, loving guides we are.
Bob, Susan and I, attended the Official Cast and Filmmaker Party later Monday evening. There we had our chance to speak with Helen, (soooo great), John, (I love this man. He is brilliant), Bill (WHMacy). I now call him “Bill”. They were also thrilled with the response the movie received. I told Helen I couldn’t have been more pleased with her portrayal of me. We had spent hours talking and discussing each session I had with Mark. She even asked
me to read her lines into a tape recorder, so she could work with her dialect coach to speak with my Boston Accent. (but not quite as thick as mine). It made me very happy when I heard her say Mark the way I do.
Earlier during Q&A after the Premier, Helen, when asked about her challenge to be comfortable with the nudity her role required, said she wanted to give an accurate portrayal of me and the true intimacy of my work. Thank you Helen!!!
I had more time to speak with Robin Weigert who played Calamity Jane on Deadwood. I believe she is one of the best actresses in I’ve ever watched. She had a very small role in this film. I’m hopeful we will all have the chance to see her in more challenging roles which she loves.
Bob and I are exhausted, but ecstatic. As soon as we get home we do a taping of the Dr. Drew shown on HLN an affiliate of CNN. I’m hopeful we can relax this weekend. A first happened today. One of the great drivers who took us to and from many of the venues we needed to get to, asked me for my autograph. I have to say it was nice feeling. He also took a photo of Bob and Me!!
The drive to Salt Lake City from Park City was spectacularly beautiful. We were surrounded by snow covered cliffs, and the approach to SLC, from the canyon we were in, opened onto a wide panoramic expanse with mountains way across on the other side of the large plain the city sits on and on either side of us. I definitely to visit UTAH again to go hiking. The locals say Spring is a beautiful time to visit.

Well now that we are home and back to our real world, we are anticipating the Sundance Judges decission with regards to the best movies at the festival. We are hopeful the The Surrogate will win, but no matter if it does or doesn’t, we all know how perfect it is and feel confident it will be popular with audiences.
If you’re interested, the Sundance 2012 awards show will be on at 7:00 Mountain Time (6:00 on the coast) this saturday January 28th. It will also be live-streamed at WWW.SUNDANCE.ORG/FESTIVAL. Cheryl’s movie “The Surrogate” has a very good chance to win the Grand Jury Prize in the dramatic film category.
Sorry about the change in print. I did a cut and past and this is what came out. I hope you find what I’ve written interesting. As you can probably imagine I was tired each night when we were at Sundance, and I’m not quite caught up on my sleep.
Now I prepare for hip replacement surgery on Feb. 8th. Please think positive thoughts of me recovering quickly. I’ve got lots more living to do!!!
LOVE~~~~ Cheryl
